Congratulations to Gabor for his super-human performance at last weekends Ironman Canada. Gabor took 2^nd place in the 50-54 category, riding his new Cervelo P3 with some very special ZIPP 404 wheels. Gabor rode those wheels with some extra determination thinking about a very special friend. Gabor is now off to the Gold Coast in Australia. He will be supporting the Canadian National Triathlon Team at the ITU World Championships, working as the Head Bike Mechanic and returning home in mid-September.

The Cervelo P4 has landed!!!

It was a very exciting day at FSC as we received our first P4. After we fondled the frame for a while I was able to take this photo. The plan is to have Gabor build it with some Sram Red components and Profile Design bars. Make a plan to come by and have a look.

Tour of California

Fort Street Cycle employee Cam Maysmith and girlfriend Tanya Gadsby went down to watch stage 2 of the Tour of California. Here is their story.

Cam and I had visions of sunny, cloudless skies when we booked our trip to San Francisco. However, when we arrived the skies were choked with dark clouds and the constant rain made us feel like we’d never left Victoria. Though this hardly dampened our spirits for the highlight of our trip: the Tour of California!

The second stage was set to start in Sausalito, a quaint seaside town just across the Golden Gate Bridge. The riders would do a neutral lap of Sausalito before spinning across the Golden Gate and along the highway down the coast.

The morning of the race, we caught a ferry across the Bay and arrived in Sausalito a little weary (it was 7:30am!), but wide-eyed and eager like two kids in a bike store. There was so much to see, it was overwhelming: the team cars and RVs were just pulling into the parking lot, a huge START banner had been erected next to a big tent, and there were throngs of people milling about, most of whom were in cycling gear. The excitement in the air was palpable.

We wandered over to the START line, as the race schedule said this was where you could meet the riders before the race. However, the rain refused to let up and there were murmurs through the crowd that the riders would stay holed up in their team RVs until the last minute. So, with camera in tow, Cam and I headed to the parking lot where the massive team RVs were parked. A crowd three or four people deep surrounded the Astana RV, waiting for the appearance of legendary Lance Armstrong. A similar crowd surrounded the team Ouch RV, everyone straining to see the notorious Floyd Landis.

With everyone so focused on these two celebrities, the remaining team RVs were relatively quiet. It felt like the opportunity of a lifetime to see some of cycling’s greatest athletes. Being small in stature, I was able to crouch down and nudge my way around people’s legs to snap some great shots of Thor Hushovd (who later went on to win stage 3) and Mark Cavendish. Even George Hincapie made a brief appearance before climbing astride his bike and heading to the start line.

After my paparazzi like photo session, we stationed ourselves along the sidewalk of the main road in Sausalito. The riders would do one neutral lap of the town and we wanted a good spot to catch the action! As the riders rounded the corner, the crowd erupted into cheers. We caught a glimpse of Lance Armstrong, and possibly Floyd Landis as the riders whipped past. It didn’t take long for the riders to do the loop and head back down the street. This time the peloton was spread wide across the road and was moving fast. The crowd pressed in around us, but we were determined to get good shots of the riders. So we inched out further. And further. Maybe a little too far… three Rock Racing riders yelled and waved at us to move! It was hard to tell just how close we were to the action, since I was peering through a camera lens. The peloton passed six inches from my head, and all I could hear was the whirr of derallieurs.

After such an exhilarating experience, we vowed that our next trip would be to the peaks of the Tour de France where the fans are crazier and the mountains are grueling.

I realize that this has nothing to do with the sport of Triathlon but… After I was nearly run off the road on my bike by a drive who thinks that his schedule is more important then my life I came across this video on crankmychain.com. Watching this video calmed my nerves and showed me that there is a place on this earth where bikes, cars, and buses can exist together without the fear of being a statistic.

Gillian Carleton, BC Time Trial Champion

Congratulations to Team Fort Street Cycle in their efforts at the TOC last weekend. Gillian, Cam, and Gabor, swam biked and ran away from the competition, finishing the sprint Triathlon in 57:10 and taking the mixed team event. Carla came back from a week of holiday to post a very respectable time of 1:07:59 placing her 3rd in the Female 20-29 category. This year’s event has raised over $16,000 for the Women’s Sexual Assault Centre. Way to go athletes and volunteers.

Mira Laurence from A Channel interviewed Canadian Olympic Triathlete Simon Whitfield today at Fort Street Cycle. The interview was for TSN. If you look closely you can see one of the special addition Olympic paint jobs on the Soloist Carbon frame in the background. The frames had been shipped to FSC so that Canadian Triathlon Team Mechanic Gabor Herner can build them before he and the athletes head off to Beijing early next month. The frame behind Simon will be ridden by Canadian Triathlete Colin Jenkins.

Fort Street Cycle History

The year was 1990. Denise and Doug Grams and their young daughter were on the road, taking a well earned year of travelling to celebrate Doug’s exit from 20 successful years in the Vancouver lumber industry and to consider their next move. They knew they wanted to relocate to a smaller community where they could use their business skills to supply a product that would promote a healthy lifestyle. A three month cycling expedition in Australia provided part of the answer (homicidal Aussie drivers, road littered with dead poisonous snakes, challenging hills and the youngest member of the entourage’s hissie fits notwithstanding) and Victoria seemed like the ideal location to make it happen.

Fort Street Cycle, established in 1992 was the realization of that dream. The early years were spent assessing the needs of Victoria’s cycling community and finding a niche by responding to those needs. Outstanding customer service continues to be the guiding principle that has seen the business through a host of cycling trends from the 90’s into the 21st century. Long time staff, much appreciated for their hard work, knowledge and dependability, has been invaluable to the success of the store. From head mechanic Gabor Herner all the staff are avid and dedicated cyclists. Commuting to work by bike and participating in cycling events and competitions are shared commitments and passions.

Sponsorship of local cyclists and involvement in local races has been important to Fort Street Cycle since its inception. Initial community involvement in the early 90’s was in the mountain bike sector, sponsoring events such as the Burnt Bridge Classic. Triathlon came on strong in the mid 90’s and Fort Street Cycle continues to support events up to the present as sponsors of the In-House Y Triathlon, the Sooke Spring Triathlon and the Triathlon for Healing, (now known as the Triathlon for Compassion). The store also donates time, prizes and funding to road racing and supports the Royal Victoria Marathon. This connection to community events and the benefits that flow from them to the larger society has proven to be one of the most satisfying aspects of Fort Street Cycle’s operations.

Fort Street Cycle looks forward to a long and bright future serving its wonderful customers and being a part of the cycling capital of Canada.
